The “Polso Sano” Tournament, first held in 1977 and eagerly awaited each year by thousands of Pulsano residents, features a medieval historical parade and an arm-wrestling competition between the town’s historic districts. Preceded by processions in medieval costumes with jugglers, flag-throwers, drummers, and all kinds of performers, for over forty years the tournament has brought life and colour to the town square.
The event is officially recognised in the national register of historical re-enactments promoted by the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

The Nuptial Court, led by King Ladislaus of Anjou-Durazzo of Naples and his wife Maria d’Enghien, Countess of Lecce and Princess of Taranto, is accompanied by the courts of neighbouring fiefs, who come to pay homage to the royals and their children.
Each year, these visiting courts, with their noble retinues, help make the commemoration of this joyful wedding truly special.
The Polso Sano parade recalls a significant historical event: in 1407, Maria d’Enghien, Princess of Taranto, and Ladislaus of Anjou-Durazzo, King of Naples, after their wedding, travelled to the fief of Pulsano as guests of Baron Marino De Falconibus and stayed at the castle.
Here, they watched contests of the “Game of the Wrist” between Pulsano’s soldiers and the town’s bravest citizens.
The De Falconibus Court is accompanied by a retinue of ladies-in-waiting, pages, and men-at-arms, as well as by the small courts of the historic districts of the ancient fief.
Each year, the districts are announced in the square by a herald and precede the appearance of the barons—Marino De Falconibus and his noble consort—followed by their children.

The ancient arm-wrestling tournament, known as Polso Sano, has very old origins. It is said that even the Roman garrisons stationed here would challenge each other to the “Game of the Wrist” during moments of boredom.
Hundreds of years later, the town’s districts continue to compete every year, and the desire to win for the glory of one’s own district remains as strong as ever.
